Do we get our "money sense" from our parents?

Ever since I was a little kid, my dad and grandfather would tell me to save my money and or put it into a bank. That was when I was making a whopping $10 to $20 doing yards and hauling hay during the summer. As soon as I was paid, I couldn't spend it fast enough on video games and junk food. My mom and I have the same "buying stuff" ticks. Now that I'm an adult, I've had a hard time trying to break myself from many of my old spending habits. Does anyone think that "money sense" is a genetic thing?

My parents were grandparents were (and still are) also quite thrifty and it has paid off for my parents because they were both able to retire at 60. They always encouraged me to save, but never forced me to save. Unsurprisingly, I tended to spend whatever money I had on the newest video game or Abercrombie & Fitch shirt.

Both of my parents are wonderful and have done nothing but support my brother and I, but I do fault them for pampering me throughout my adolescence and not teaching me how to save money for the future. Sure, they were always there to help me out if I ever needed a few extra bucks, but I never got the financial lessons I needed.

It took me until my late 20's and early 30's to basically figure it all out for myself. Now I'm saving like they were in their early 20's. Better late than never.

My life story in a nutshell, financially. My parents were terrible with money my entire childhood and teenage years. So I never had shining examples that's for sure. I don't exactly fault them, but it certainly never helped. I blame education systems more than anything tbh.

I don't think its genetic. But I think you only know what you are exposed to; if no one you look up to ever teaches you how to be smart with money, how the world are you supposed to know how to do it?
