Is there a benefit to gift card exchange programs?

I've had old gift cards just lying around and collecting dust in my drawers and on my countertops. I know there are services out there that will take your gift cards with remaining balances and give you cash for them. Has anyone ever used this type of service before? Or is it a rip off? I definitely could see it being pretty beneficial when that uncle gets you a gift card to a store you wouldn't want to shop at. I know this because it happened to me. :)

I'd say the only benefit is getting cash for the otherwise useless giftcard (if you plan on never going to where the gift card is for). Other than that, I'm pretty sure you lose money on them so the company can somehow make a profit.
