how do you get surgery when you're uninsured?

I have a friend who really needs to get hernia surgery. He has no insurance and he makes very little money. Are there certain hospitals that he can go to to get the surgery? I'm guessing if there is, he must have to fall into a priority group. I dunno, just thinking out loud there. I'm also guessing that the final bill would have some sort of high interest since he isn't insured. I bet this is something you wouldn't want to do unless you really had to for the sake of your health. I know I'd be willing to come out of pocket more if I were in a similar situation. Anyone who is in-the-know on the subject, feel free to chime in.

In the states? You just have to grit your teeth and accept you'll be in debt for a while. It's a pretty horrible system.

Yikes, I was afraid of that. I just heard there were those hospitals that uninsured people go to.
