Trump demands $2000 stimulus checks

Its a little odd seeing Pelosi and Trump agree on something but it happened. Congress passed another stimulus package, this one set to send $600 direct payments to most people in the country. And Trump called it a 'disgrace', saying the bill should be amended from $600 checks to $2000 checks before he signs it into law.

He didn't threaten to veto the bill. And from my understanding he can't as it passed with enough votes to make it veto-proof. But he does have Democrat support, perhaps enough to make this happen, at least in the House.

Pelosi came out in agreement, responding to Trump's tweet with this:

Republicans repeatedly refused to say what amount the President wanted for direct checks. At last, the President has agreed to $2,000 — Democrats are ready to bring this to the Floor this week by unanimous consent. Let’s do it!

So... what are the chances of an 11th hour change to the stimulus bill to up checks to $2k? Please say more than 0..

Nothing surprises me anymore, but this is more likely than not an empty threat. The bill passed overwhelmingly in both houses with far more votes than needed to override a Presidential veto.

If President Trump really wanted checks to be $2,000 then he would have flatly stated so during the negotiations. I have a feeling this is more him trying to "get back" at Republican Senators who have finally accepted reality and admitted that President-elect Biden won in November and will be the next President come January.

Seems slim. Hard to follow the way the veto would work and what could happen. I don't know. I do think they should up it. Would be nice if they could figure out exactly who needs it the most and send them $2000. That amount could help. $600 on the other hand doesn't even cover rent for almost anyone.

Small business owners, unemployed, those under a certain income, etc. .. I don't need $2,000 but I'll certainly take it.

The House voted to increase the 2nd stimulus check to $2,000 for most people, but I honestly don't know what the Senate is going to do. I long ago stopped predicting things in politics, but if 10 or so Republicans come out in favor of it then I think it's a very real possibility.

We should know in the next day or two at the latest because Congress will almost certainly go home for the New Year and then a new session of Congress begins on 1/3/2021.

Any idea what this does to the IRS deadline of sending out checks to everyone by Jan 15th? Think checks will get delayed, will they send out multiple checks, or force everyone to take stimulus checks as tax credits if they miss the deadline? Of course all of those questions depends on if they up the stimulus or not.

Sanders and now Sherrod Brown are filibustering. Maybe Ed Markey too. This will be very interesting.......
